A ton of ideas to mix up your porridge…

I love porridge. I’d go as far to say I am a bit of an addict. I rarely have anything else and nothing satisfies me as much as a huge bowl of porridge.

Porridge can help to lower high blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol and is full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Oats are great an hour before a workout as they are slow releasing energy source which helps to maintain blood sugar levels and provide enough energy to fuel your workout. I enjoy them after a workout as a refuel too.

It doesn’t need to be boring or laden with added sugar to taste nice either.

I make mine on the hob and use 1/2 cup of porridge oats and a generous amount of milk until the oats are covered. I cook on a really low heat stirring frequently.

Here are my tips to making the perfect bowl of porridge:

Pick your mixer: Milk, almond milk, coconut or what ever kind of milk takes your fancy. I have tried them all and the only one two I would say doesn’t work for me are rice milk and water. They do not give you the creamy thick texture that a bowl of porridge needs. I do not believe you should restrict yourself on this if trying to save calories.

Pick your fruit: I usually use frozen fruit and if you read this blog you will know why, Thrifty Thursday: Frozen Fruit. Banana, grated apple, pear, a homemade fruit compote, literally give them all a try variety is the spice of life.

Choose your flavouring: I like to add my homemade Thrifty Thursday: Easy Peasy homemade Nut butters to mine. So much flavour but I equally like to add dark 80% chocolate too. Turn your boring porridge into a chocolate feast. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are great too. Maybe a few drops of vanilla essence or cocoa powder.

Choose your crunch: Now this is optional but if like me you get more satisfaction from having a bit of crunch to your porridge then try adding some chopped, ground, or flaked nuts, shredded coconut or I like to try a mix of ground cereal toppers that I get from Lidl.
